Every once in a while, I find little nuggets in my journal—quotes, bite-sized pieces of advice someone told me, or thoughts I just didn’t want to forget. This was one of those times:
“Focus on the little wins. Sometimes it’s easier to get to home plate base by base instead of always swinging for the fences.”
We often chase the grand slam, always looking for the big moment. But success isn’t always about hitting it out of the park. I think it depends on the season you're in…
If you're struggling, you're at a low point, maybe you’re barely able to get out of bed—focus on the little wins. Even Jesus reminds us not to be anxious about tomorrow because today has enough to handle (Matthew 6:34). Sometimes, the victory is as simple as showing up and trusting that faithfulness in small things will lead to greater things in time (Luke 16:10).
I believe some of my greatest small wins have been as simple as a hug with my wife or with my boys.
In business, little wins might mean putting on a smile, improving one small thing, or pushing through until 5p. I don’t like to admit it, but there have been plenty of times when I was counting down the seconds until the end of the day. I know there is still purpose in all of it, but it’s still hard. In those times, I’ll pray, “Lord, help me fulfill Your will today. Help me do something small that will lead to honoring You and glorifying Your name.”
Then, there are times when you know you are in sync with God’s plan—it feels like momentum is on your side, and everything clicks. This is where I crave to be. When you find yourself in these seasons, you can afford to take the big swing. In fact, I’d encourage you to take it.
At the end of the day, though, I think it’s important to remember that if it’s a tie game, bottom of the ninth, two outs, and the winning run is on third—you don’t need a home run to win. Sometimes, a simple hit is all it takes.
Many blessings to you and yours this week.
