You hear people talk about passion all the time, especially when it comes to career choices.
"What are you passionate about? Follow your passion."
Bruh (this is how the kids now say it)—let’s be real. Some days, I’m just passionate about making it to tomorrow.
Look, as many of you know, I was never passionate about scooters. (For those of you new here, I own a company called New Scooters 4 Less, which I’ve run for 21 years.) What I was passionate about was solving a problem—helping University of Florida students get to class reliably. That passion led to an even greater one: entrepreneurship and building businesses. And that led me to realize that what you are doing isn’t as important as to why you are doing it. Sometimes, God is simply calling us to follow Him and trust Him.
On April 21, 2021, I wrote this thought down in my journal:
Maybe Noah wasn’t passionate about building the Ark (maybe he was, who knows?). Maybe he was more passionate about what he was saving —> his family —> the animals —> maybe he was simply passionate about serving God.
How can I serve you today, Lord? If it’s truly about your will and not mine, I consistently have to remind myself to give it all to you.
When I reflect on Noah’s story, I try to put myself in his shoes. If I were him, I’d probably be thinking, “You’ve got to be kidding me, God.” Maybe Noah was already a master craftsman before he was called to build the Ark, in which case he might have been thrilled about this project, or maybe he had never built a thing in his life. The Bible doesn’t tell us. But it does show us that his obedience mattered more than whether or not the work itself excited him.
Sometimes, our real passion isn’t about what we’re doing—it’s about why we’re doing it.
If you’re feeling stuck, frustrated, or unmotivated in your work (trust me, I’ve been there), step back and focus on your why. Hold onto that. That’s what makes building your Ark worth it.
And… you’ll need to hold on tight to that why again when the storm finally arrives.
What’s your why? Drop it in the comments and let me know!
Love you guys. Thanks for reading.
